Teacher David tunes into phonics

A BARNSLEY teacher’s moment of inspiration when trying to teach a sport-obsessed teenager to read has turned into an £80,000 project which is transforming the way teachers help youngsters switched off from learning.

David Fallis was at Springwell Learning Community a few years ago working one-to-one with a 15-year-old lad who wasn’t interested in learning about anything that wasn’t sport.

Bringing Phonics to Life

David Fallis talks about Active Phonics –the intervention he created to help children and young people who struggle with phonics in a classroom setting.

It all began when I was trying to help a 16-year-old boy at Springwell Learning Community who had a very low reading age. Traditional interventions were not working for him – he just wanted to work out in the sports hall.
